Joey's Story
BSR030437 Karens second chance pal Joey. Joey came in to BSR near death due to a genetic condition Megaesphogus with a heart constriction. The short version he could eat but food could not get to his stomach . I did not know if he would live thru the night at 4.5 most old he weighed 5lbs. We saw a specialist in Raleigh but had to get at least 3 bus on him for the surgery. He was fed every2 hrs 2 oz of liquid. Fast forward surgery was done and was successful. Even tho they only gave us a 50/50 chance of him making it thru the surgery. But he did and was bonfire from then on.
we still had to fed him all liquids 6 times a day but he was gaining weight , playing and retrieving. It became obvious to me he had a drive and a talent but what. I was not a trainer and joey needed one but he was special needs. Nobody wanted a dog they had to feed 5 times a day talent or not. So I red and did the best I could took him to Nationals 4-16. Joey was 1 year old,32 lbs and healthy and more energy than you can imagine. I spoke with a few trainers and yes has got talent but don’t have time. The last day of Nationals I met Blaine Tarnecki. A young trainer Liked him and he was willing to take Joey special needs or not he would do 5 feedings a day.
Nationals 2017 Joey came in the top 10 with Mary Beth Tarnecki as his handler. Joey continued to compete and he loved it. He came home for breaks of 2-3 months and then back to training. Blaine called me one day and said Joey had passed out and was at the vet they found nothing wrong but I did genetic test at PAWPRINT. He was a train wreck genetically He also had EIC Exercised Induced Collapse. When dogs are run-in g hard etc their muscles produce a enzyme thats helps them with EIC some produce less and can’t perform usually occurs when they are overheated.
We watched him and he continued to compete. The second rescue to achieve HRCH title. He competed in the Grand Masters, the only rescue ever.
After that in July of 2018 he came home for a break of a couple of months. Next stop AKC Grand. He thrived and was wide open all the time but he rested went to the beach, he was going back to Blaine's in Nov.
Oct 17,2018 I came home from work My husband is retired and said I think something is wrong with Joey He was under the kitchen table shaking and had that look when I spoke to him.I thought poison because he is outside a lot with Bill but came up with nothing. I picked him up and went to y vet. They did X-rays,blood ,poke ,prodded everything Joey never whimpered. Nothing came back wrong. She said take him home no steps watch him 24 hours call in the morning. Gave him a shot for pain sent a RX home with me. He did fine that night,
Next morning he got up acted great ,ate ,I talked to the vet I had planned on a 3 day beach trip, that's fine make him rest. Off we went.
Got to the beach got out at doggie park Joey could hardly walk. I thought well been riding awhile 10 minutes later he was worse . Did a video sent to vet ,she called get back now!!! 2.5 hours later They took 1 look at Joey and said get to NC State Vet School Now!!! They called ahead. It was State Fair week traffic was a Nightmare. It usually takes an hour on a good day I made it in 50 minutes. I was a total wreck.
We got to state it was 8PM. They could not do an MRI until the next day and he was Megaesphogus another problem go home we will call. Really !!!
Well they called and he herniated disk L10 and 12. They also found a growth in his throat where they had done the Mega surgery another problem. They had 3 dept heads that were gonna meet to see if they c ould do surgery ,didn’t know if the could tube him because of the mega if they could not then we had no choices. They called me at noon on Oct 18,2018 and said they were going to do the surgery no promises, he might survive the surgery but would never walk. I said you don’t know this dog He will walk ,Will run ,He will retrieve. I had never heard of Ivdd.Surgery was a success and they also removed bone fragments. Did a throat biopsy.this was on a friday we finally saw him on Sunday. He was discharged Oct 22,2018
I had no idea what we were in for. We had to express his urine for 10 days but then he finally could. % days later he was throwing up he ad a severe UTI it took 2 most to clear that up and another 1000$.He started red in Mar.State released him the first of june 2018 I finished rehab at home. We walked every day,I bought a pool 8x4. to swim him and walk. I am still doing that.
Last fall I did the IVDD test with PAWPRINTS. He was high risk with 1 copy of the Mutation. Today He walks, runs and retrieves but no competition. He still has the drive but it is just too risky. He is still wide open. I try not to be an overbearing mom but I am.
